On site and off site renal biopsies are evaluated by HPL at the Queen’s Medical Center Punchbowl Campus. Renal biopsies are coordinated between the submitting physician and ordering physician. Diagnosis of non-neoplastic renal diseases such as lupus nephritis, IgA nephropathy and other abnormalities of kidney function require a panel of special stains, immunofluorescence, and ultrastructural imaging. With the exception of electron microscopy, these studies are all performed by the laboratory staff and diagnosis is rendered by a board certified, fellowship trained renal pathologist. Acute and chronic medical renal conditions as well as transplantation pathology are reported to local nephrologists and providers across the Pacific Basin.
For adequate evaluation, biopsies need to be submitted in proper preservation media. 10% neutral buffered formalin, michel’s or zeus fixative, and 2.5% glutaraldehyde is required for light microscopy, immunofluorescence and electron microscopy, respectively.
If these preservation media are not available or for more instructions please call (808) 691-4271. Requisitions will require pertinent clinical information and contact information.
