HPL Welcomes Dr. Lisa Kim

Honolulu, Hawaii – (February 12, 2014) –Dr. Lisa Kim has joined Hawaii Pathologists Laboratory as a specialty trained renal pathologist.  Dr. Kim graduated from the University of Pennsylvania and received her medical degree from the New York University School of Medicine.  After completing her residency training in Chicago at Northwestern University's, McGaw Medical Center, Dr. Kim went on to fellowship training in renal pathology at the University of Chicago Medical Center where over 800 native and transplant renal biopsies are seen annually.

Dr. Kim’s specialty service fills a void in the local nephrology community in which complex medical renal diseases, such as lupus nephritis, IgA nephropathy, and other immune-related glomerulonephritides are not infrequently encountered, and have not been adequately studied in relation to the diverse population of the Pacific. Dr. Kim also works with the transplant team to facilitate patient care in emergent cases of acute rejection.

“With the increase in the number of kidney transplant recipients from both deceased donors and living-related donors at Queens Medical Center, she is a welcome addition to the services we already offer,” said Dr. David Shimizu, managing partner for Hawaii Pathologists’ Laboratory.  “Having a specialist located on island, as a resource, makes a big difference in patient care.”

Dr. Kim is a faculty member of the Department of Pathology at the University of Hawaii John A. Burns School of Medicine.  She is also a member of several professional societies including the American Society of Nephrology, Renal Pathology Society, College of American Pathologists, American Society for Clinical Pathology and the United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology.  Her interests also include preventing the progression of chronic kidney disease by bringing awareness of the impact of diabetes and hypertension, particularly in Asians and Pacific Islanders.
