What is a Pathologist

A Pathologist is a physician specialist who works with your doctor to accurately interpret your laboratory test.  Sometimes that test is a blood test.  Other times it is a pap smear or a biopsy.  We work behind the scenes talking with your treating doctor about your symptoms and the next steps in your personalized diagnosis and treatment plan.

Hawai’i Pathologists’ Laboratory (HPL) is the premier pathology practice in Hawai’i.  We are committed to providing the highest quality service and are honored to work with the numerous dedicated, outstanding physicians in our community.  Our Pathologists have over 150 years of collective experience in diagnostic medicine.  We are all certified by the American Board of Pathology and have fellowships or other subspecialty training.

In addition to your Doctor, we also work with many dedicated allied health professionals at The Queen’s Medical Center and Diagnostic Laboratory Services.  Without these specialists we could not meet our patients’ and physicians’ needs.  These professionals include Pathology Assistants, Histotechnologists, Cytotechnologists, Medical  Technologists, Service Representatives, Laboratory Assistants and Couriers, just to name a few.

Hawai’i Pathologists’ Laboratory is the major Pathology teaching site in Hawai’i.  We are privileged to support the educational mission of the University of Hawai’i School of Medicine with over 70 credit hours of instruction per year, as well as assisting the Pathology, Ob/GYN, Surgery, Orthopedics, Internal Medicine and Family Medicine residency training programs.

At Hawai’i Pathologists’ Laboratory, the patient always comes first.
